Client Context
ConnectionAI set out to bring greater predictability to the structural steel industry. Its AI-powered platform generates, tracks and remembers structural steel connections from bid to build, applying artificial intelligence to highly specialised engineering workflows.
Delivered as SaaS, the platform lets engineering and construction teams upload engineering models and use AI to analyse connections, draw insights from structural models and engineering documents, and support detailing and estimation decisions.
ConnectionAI partnered with Blackbook AI from the early stages of development to help build, productise and expand the platform.
The Challenge
In structural steel projects, detailed connection information typically isn't available until a complete model has been produced for detailing and fabrication, which can take weeks or months. By that stage, coordination and constructability issues are usually harder and more costly to resolve. ConnectionAI's goal was to bring that information into the process much earlier, so teams can spot potential issues and make decisions while changes are still easy to manage.
Achieving this meant capturing specialised detailing expertise in software. Connection modelling has traditionally relied on experienced detailers, who interpret framing conditions, decide on connection types and manually model bolts, plates, welds and related components. ConnectionAI utilises rich real-world structural data to train its models to reliably predict these details, scaffolded by a scalable platform to deliver that capability to customers. Meeting both needs required expertise in artificial intelligence, software engineering, platform architecture and product delivery.
The Solution
Working alongside the ConnectionAI team, Blackbook AI contributed across multiple phases of platform development, helping build both the core capabilities and the supporting engineering foundations required to deliver them.
Building the Core AI Foundation
Blackbook AI provided expert capabilities in machine learning and artificial intelligence to help ConnectionAI launch its first AI model. The engagement also included the development of model architectures, training pipelines, evaluation frameworks and supporting AI systems that formed the foundation of the platform's prediction capability.
Turning AI into a Product
As the platform evolved, Blackbook AI's role grew beyond AI development to support the broader requirements needed to bring the product to market. This included platform integrations, deployment and release processes, operational tooling, monitoring capabilities and architectural enhancements that enabled the platform to continue to grow and support new functionality.
Delivering Product Capabilities
Over the course of the engagement, Blackbook AI contributed to the delivery of several significant platform initiatives.
- Steel Detailing Index: Functionality designed to estimate detailing effort from engineering model data and to support planning and bidding workflows.
- Engineering Validation: Capabilities supporting the review and verification of engineering outputs and connection data.
- Engineering Data Workflows: Solutions focused on extracting, structuring and managing engineering information from technical documentation and related data sources.
- Expanded Connection Coverage: Enhancements that increased the range of structural steel connection types supported by the platform.
- Platform Enhancements: Backend and frontend development, integrations, notification services and ongoing feature delivery.
The Outcomes
- First AI model launched: ConnectionAI took its first connection-prediction model from development into production.
- Earlier connection insight: Teams can now access connection information much earlier, before a full detailing model exists, and resolve issues while changes are still easy to make.
- A market-ready SaaS product: Deployment, release, monitoring and operational tooling gave ConnectionAI the foundations to serve customers reliably.
- A broader product offering: The Steel Detailing Index, engineering validation and engineering data workflows extended the platform beyond connection prediction into planning, bidding and review.
- Wider connection coverage: The platform now supports a greater range of structural steel connection types.
- A scalable foundation for growth: Architectural enhancements mean the platform can keep adding new functionality as ConnectionAI expands.
Long-Term Partnership
What began as an AI engineering engagement evolved into a long-term technology partnership. This collaborative approach enabled both teams to continue evolving the platform while combining ConnectionAI's deep structural steel domain expertise with Blackbook AI's specialist AI engineering and software delivery capability.
As ConnectionAI continues to expand, Blackbook AI remains an active partner, supporting the ongoing development of new capabilities and platform enhancements.
