AI Capability Maturity Scorecard

A structured snapshot of where the organization stands on its AI journey today, and the target state to aim for. Each dimension is scored independently on a 1–5 scale; the gap between baseline and target drives the roadmap.

How the Scorecard Works

01. Score Independently

Rate each of the seven dimensions 1–5 against the maturity criteria. Use half-points (e.g. 2.5) where the organization sits between two levels.

02. Record the Evidence

Every score is backed by a concrete observation, such as a policy, a pilot count, or a platform, not a gut feel.

03. Set a Target

Typically one to two levels above baseline, chosen deliberately rather than defaulting to "as high as possible."

04. Take the Weakest Link

Overall maturity is the lowest-scoring dimension, not the average, because that capability caps what the organization can reliably achieve.

Five Levels of Maturity

Each level builds on the last, from individual curiosity to an AI-native operating model where the capability itself is the competitive advantage.

Level 1

Exploring

Ad-hoc, individual curiosity. No strategy or sponsorship.

Level 2

Experimenting

Pilot projects, emerging sponsorship, fragmented effort.

Level 3

Operationalizing

AI in production; defined process and formal governance.

Level 4

Scaling

Enterprise-wide platform, CoE, reuse and standardization.

Level 5

Transforming

AI-native operating model; a core competitive advantage.

Seven Dimensions

Each is scored on its own. A strong strategy can't offset weak governance, and a talented team can't offset unmeasured value.
